Case Study: Japandi meets BBQube X
Architecture for outdoor spaces

How code2design and OCQ fused a Japandi-style Tiny House and a bespoke outdoor kitchen into a coherent living space under open sky

Starting point: reduction meets quality of life.
Japandi – the subtle balance of Japanese calm and Scandinavian clarity – is more than a style. It’s an attitude.

Designer Michael Schmidt and his code2design team developed a Tiny House from this idea: 30 m² interior + 35 m² terrace, built within 4–5 weeks, conceived as a climate-conscious retreat with PV supply and infrared floor heating. Large glass sliding doors open the living space to the outside – where life actually takes place.

Our approach at OCQ: to complete this architecture in the outdoor space with a precisely planned BBQube X – so that aesthetics, function, and durability become one. Design meets precision. Made in Germany. BBQube X offers modular planning depth, premium materials, and has been awarded for its product design.

The task: An outdoor kitchen that speaks architecture

Objective: Define the terrace as a second living space – formally reduced, warm to the touch, technically confident.

Guiding questions

  • • How does the kitchen remain visually calm yet functionally versatile?
  • • How do we integrate layout, proportion, and material into Japandi architecture?
  • • How do we secure long-term enjoyment in the exposed outdoor environment?

The Design: BBQube X as a quiet force on 35 m²

Geometry & Proportion: A linear island with a concealed plinth gives the volume a floating appearance. The terrace stays generous – sightlines to nature and horizon remain unobstructed.

Materiality: Fine joint patterns, monolithic edges, durable exterior materials. BBQube X offers a wide range of surfaces – harmoniously tone-on-tone or as a deliberate contrast within the composition.

Usage Scenarios: Cooking for two, gathering with six. Work zones (preparation, water, grill) are positioned to keep paths short while preserving eye contact with guests.

All-Weather Suitability: Weather-resistant construction, high-quality appliances, thoughtful detailing – for an outdoor kitchen that brings joy year-round.

Planning certainty: structured, transparent, collaborative

  1. Context & Requirements: We begin with the architectural grid of the Tiny House, interior furnishing, and exterior routes. Requests on appliances (grill, cooktop, cooling, etc.), storage, and seating areas are prioritised. The open spatial logic of the code2design concept remains the guiding principle.
  2. Material and colour concept: Japandi thrives on natural textures and tactile calm. We curate surfaces so that wood, glass, and textiles from the house complement each other – without visual noise. The BBQube X finish selection enables precise matching to terrace and façade.
  3. Technology & Ergonomics: Appliance configuration according to cooking style: from precision gas or ceramic grill to plancha – always tailored to height, reach, and practicality. The modular system of BBQube X gives planners full design freedom with clear detailing.
  4. Realisation: Installation is precisely aligned to construction plans of the Tiny House. Clean junctions, weather protection, alignment to terrace joints – craftsmanship down to the detail.

Result: An outdoor space that breathes

By day, a calm workspace under open sky. By evening, a place for enjoyment and conversation. The kitchen becomes the social centre – with seating at the counter and short paths from cooktop to table. Everything interlocks: architecture, furniture, light, and surfaces.

Details that make the difference

  • Reduction needs system: The calmer the form, the more important joint patterns, shadow gaps, cutout details.
  • Material dialogue: Soft woods and warm ceramic surfaces bring balance to the technically robust outdoor kitchen.
  • Light leads: Indirect lighting defines zones and depth – without disturbing the site’s tranquility.
  • Weather in mind Wind direction, rainfall, humidity, weather protection – so joy remains long-term.
